Rationale
Our Uniform Policy is set to reflect a practical approach to achieving a standard of uniform that is both functional and smart. It is designed to achieve equal opportunities wherever possible.
Purpose
1. To ensure that the students of the School enjoy a corporate identity.
2. To provide safe and functional clothing and footwear.
3. To minimise any personal risks to students’ health and safety.
The Uniform
All students attending Westlands School in years 7 to 11 inclusive will wear the uniform detailed below:
| Boys | Girls | |
| Top | Black Sweatshirt * | Black Sweatshirt * |
| Shirt | White polo shirt with collar * | White polo shirt with collar * |
| Trousers | Black | Black Trousers or Black Skirt |
| Socks | Black | Black Socks or Black Tights |
| Shoes | Black walking | Black court/walking |
Skirts should be of an appropriate style that ensure they do not restrict movement nor cause embarrassment to either the wearer or other members of the School Community. A guide for their length would be between 5 cms above or below the wearer’s knee.
Shoes
These must be of a safe and suitable design to ensure the safe movement of students around the site and their completion of their academic studies. The footwear must be wholly black, water proof and of a style that is not likely to endanger the wearer whilst in the School.
Jewellery
For the health and safety of students no jewellery is to be worn in school.
Earrings are not to be worn by boys or girls. Only sleepers or studs may be worn, with a maximum of one worn in each ear. These MUST be removed for practical lessons.
Nose studs/rings are not generally to be worn in school.
Necklaces and chains are not to be worn.
One finger ring only may be worn which must be of a plain design. This MUST be removed for practical subjects and all games/PE lessons.
It should be noted that the School cannot accept any responsibility for loss of property, or injury incurred, by students having inappropriate dress, footwear or jewellery.
Hair
The length of the individual’s hair is for the individual to decide within the following guidelines:
If longer than collar length it MUST be tied back in situations where it could cause a danger to the individual or others.
It must only be of one natural hair colour.
Shaven heads will not be allowed unless on medical grounds
Unsuitable ‘fashion’ haircuts will not be permitted
Specialist Clothing
Some subjects will require specialist clothing such as aprons, laboratory coats and goggles. When directed by the staff of Westlands School students are to wear the required specialist clothing.
PE Kit

Optional Items
It is strongly recommended that students have the School tracksuit (black and red) or the School water proof for outdoor lessons. This would be additional to their PE t-shirt and shorts.
No other tracksuits will be allowed and hooded tops are strictly not permitted on the grounds of safety.
NB – Tracksuits may only be worn for PE.
Students who bring a note to excuse them from PE or Games will be expected to wear the School tracksuit and take a passive part in the lesson. This would involve developing their observation, coaching and referring skills.
All items of kit MUST be clearly marked with the owner’s name.
* Training shoes must be non-marking and a change from normal school wear.
** Football boots with screw-in type studs, for safety reasons.
Sixth Form
Students in year 12 and 13 need not wear the School uniform outlined above. However, they must follow a dress code that ensures no beachwear is worn. Sixth form students are expected to set a good example to other students in the School and as such their clothing should be of a standard that is practical and relevant to the pursuance of their studies. Their attire must ensure that they are able to pursue their academic studies with safety at Westlands and thus they must dress appropriately for their work.
Conclusions
The standards set in a school and in particular the standard of uniform does much to enhance the learning environment for the students. The atmosphere created through the compliance of students to this dress will do much to set the tone of the School and will greatly help to encourage a good work ethic for all students.
